Morocco Breaks the 20 Million Tourist Mark: Marrakech Leads the Way

A historic record for Moroccan tourism

The year 2025 will go down in the history of Moroccan tourism. For the first time, the kingdom crossed the symbolic threshold of 20 million international tourists, far exceeding the targets set by the national tourism strategy. This exceptional performance places Morocco among the most dynamic destinations on the African continent and in the Mediterranean basin.

This spectacular growth can be attributed to several combined factors: strengthened air connectivity with new route openings, diversification of the tourism offering, and an ambitious promotional strategy targeting European and North American source markets. The aviation sector played a decisive role, with a significant increase in capacity across the country's airports.

Marrakech, the driving force of national tourism

At the heart of this success, Marrakech stands as the undisputed driving force of Moroccan tourism. In the first seven months of 2025, the ochre city welcomed 2.764 million tourists, a remarkable increase compared to the same period the previous year. Marrakech-Menara Airport recorded record traffic, driven by the proliferation of low-cost flights and the arrival of new airlines.

The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Majorelle Gardens, Jemaa el-Fna square, and traditional riads continue to captivate visitors from around the world. But Marrakech has reinvented itself beyond its historic heritage, with trendy new neighborhoods, a thriving gastronomic scene, and a wealth of outdoor activities in the Atlas Mountains hinterland.

What this means for travelers

For travelers planning to visit Marrakech, this tourism success comes with some practical considerations. It is now advisable to book accommodation and activities well in advance, particularly during peak season. On the upside, flight options have never been more abundant, with competitive fares from most major European cities. Marrakech-Menara Airport continues to benefit from ongoing infrastructure improvements to handle the increased passenger flow and ensure a smooth experience from the moment of arrival.
